On Saturday, young students of rock ‘n’ roll will wail, riff and slam in Newport News to benefit the Autism Society’s Tidewater chapter. The Academy of Rock Music and Virginia beach retailer Alpha Music are hosting the 2nd Annual Rock Autism Festival. The free event will take place at Styron Square, Port Warwick, in Newport News from noon to 8:00 p.m.
“All 20 Academy bands – over 120 young musicians – will be performing,” said Ron Lowder, Jr., headmaster for the Newport News-based school for aspiring rockers. Prizes to be raffled include a guitar signed by all five members of metal group Lamb of God.

Would-be Lenny Kravitzes and Avril Lavignes are ready to roll with The Academy of Rock Music, a new music program for young musicians.
Ron Lowder, who started the program in Newport News, will hold classes at Alpha Music on Virginia Beach Boulevard for those ages 9 to 18 who want to learn and perform rock ‘n’ roll music with their peers.
The academy will run throughout the year with spring, summer and fall semesters. It will kick off in early July at the Beach.

Not so long ago, parents screamed at their kids to turn down that noisy, dangerous rock ‘n’ roll.
Today in Newport News, parents are paying Ron Lowder Jr. to teach their kids how to rock with the swagger of Robert Plant, the menace of Ozzy Osbourne and the rage of Johnny Rotten.
Lowder’s Academy of Rock Music opened its doors last fall in a Port Warwick office building. It already looks like a solid success.
